Background

Hello, my name is Julie and I have been truly blessed with four smart and lively children ranging in age from 12 to 23. One of the biggest, and most stressful, events in their lives has been learning to drive. I don’t know if you have had the opportunity to help guide a child, whether it is your child, a grandchild, niece, nephew, or just the neighbor kid, through this process, but it can be quite an experience!

My third oldest child recently received her drivers permit and it stirred up stored feelings and memories from when my two oldest children were learning to drive. One of my most prevalent thoughts was, “what can I do to HELP KEEP MY CHILD SAFE?” Short of providing her with a fully armored tank, (which besides being quite a sight going down the road, would be terribly expensive and probably illegal), I wracked my brain over and over to figure something out. One thing that occurred to me was possibly some sort of sign or warning to let others know there was an inexperienced driver on the road. I also wanted it to be inexpensive but highly effective in getting the point across. After a lot of research and many conversations with children and adults alike, my children and I came up with the "New Driver" cling signs.

Reactions

As soon as we received the signs, one late Tuesday afternoon, the reaction from people was incredible and immediate. Some of the comments we received have been:
    “What a great idea!”
“It’s about time someone thought of something like that!”
“I wish there had been something like that years ago!”
    “Love the color”.
    “Thanks so much!”
“You’ve got to get these out to people”.
But probably the best comment was from my children and their peers. They all thought they were cool! Awesome! I had developed something the kids like, but was also, most importantly, getting an extremely necessary safety issue out to the public. One adult laughed when he first saw the “New Driver” sign on my vehicle, but I very strongly stated that it wasn’t meant to be funny, it was to help make our roads safer for everyone! He quickly saw the point and thought it was a terrific idea!

As well as receiving all the wonderful comments, we immediately noticed that other vehicles were not following as close to us, and my daughters’ anxiety lessoned. One of my close friends’ sons also recently received his drivers permit. After applying one of the “New Driver” signs to their vehicle, she joyfully exclaimed, “no one is blaring their horns or giving obscene gestures to us anymore!” She and her son have also been more relaxed when he is behind the wheel.

I truly hope you and your child will have the same positive experiences.

Product

Let me tell you a little about the “New Driver” sign. They are produced in Grand Rapids, Michigan and come in two sizes. The larger size is 8 x 8 inches square and is suitable for SUV’s, vans and pickups. The smaller version is 6 x 6 inches and is perfect for smaller vehicles. The signs are a “cling” material, which means they won’t leave the sticky mess a sticker would, and they are not as a magnetic product. They can be placed on any part of the outside of the vehicle including windows. When you don’t want the sign on your vehicle, simply peel it off and set it aside. Slightly dampen the sign if necessary to reapply it. How easy!
